The Denali Star Train is arguably the most popular and scenic way to travel between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Operating daily throughout the summer months (mid-May through mid-September), this train offers both economy (better known as Adventure Class) and premium class (better known as Goldstar Dome Service) options.
But let’s be real, if you’re going to take this ride, you’ll want to splurge a little on the latter.
The dome cars are fully equipped with plush seating that faces outward to the large picture window-sided carts, allowing for unobstructed views of the Alaskan wilderness. Not to mention, there’s an open-air viewing platform for those who want to snap some perfect pictures without worrying about any pesky reflections!
Those who splurge on the Goldstar Service will also enjoy inclusive meals in the full-service dining room and access to the Wilderness Cafe, as well as two complimentary alcoholic beverages per adult over 21 years old!

The difference between the Denali Star Train’s Goldstar Service and the Wilderness Express is what’s included. Both include impeccable seating, but the meals and complimentary beverages are only part of the Goldstar Service ticket associated with the Denali Star Train.
Those who book the Wilderness Express will be required to pay extra for any meals or drinks they desire while onboard.

However, this train operates – you guessed it – when there is a far higher likelihood of getting a glimpse of the northern lights during the ride!
Thanks to Alaska’s polar night, there will be far more hours of darkness during the winter months to get a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis, and this stretch of land has very low light pollution.
So if you’re chasing those elusive lights on your Alaskan vacation, this could be a great option for you if you don’t have time to take a northern lights tour! If you’re looking for an Anchorage to Fairbanks winter train, this is it.

⭐ McKinley Explorer – Stops at Denali
Now, the McKinley Explore is not to be confused with the Denali Star Train, even though both are run by the same operator. Holland America Line and Princess Cruises operate these railcars, so as you can probably imagine, most of the people you’ll find on the McKinley Explorer are on group tours with their associated cruise line.
Additionally, as the name suggests, this is the McKinley Explorer – which means its last stop is Denali National Park before it turns back for Anchorage. This train does not go all the way to Fairbanks, so if that’s your final destination, you’ll need to take one of the other train options we mentioned above.
But, if you are just hoping for an Anchorage to Denali train and want something simple, then this can be a great option!

The Interior Alaska Bus Line runs a bus from Anchorage to Fairbanks for $120 per person (prices subject to change). It picks people up at the GuestHouse Suites in downtown Anchorage, but in our opinion after living in Alaska for many months, we wouldn’t suggest taking the bus.
During our time living between the Kenai Peninsula and Fairbanks, the only tourists we noticed getting off the local bus system seemed to regret doing so. The buses are tight, crammed, and if you think 12 hours on a train is a long time, well… try doing it on a bus with no bathroom!
It also only runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if this doesn’t work with your Alaskan itinerary, then you may need to consider the train or renting a car.
