โช๏ธPro Tip: We’ve been lucky enough to take this cruise ourselves on multiple occasions and it never disappoints. Sure, we’ve gotten caught up in some big waves that made some people a bit nauseous, but even on those rougher days, we still saw ample wildlife, glaciers dropping ice chunks the size of cars, and thoroughly enjoyed our time out on the water! Guests who choose this cruise to Fox Island will be treated to a luxurious buffet dinner of crab cakes, local seafood, and other delicious local cuisine.
If you choose to join a standard Kenai Fjords boat tour, then you’ll likely make a pit stop at Fox Island for those hopping off to stay overnight and get a chance to see a small bit of the island!

Not only will you get the chance to explore the stunning Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park on this epic journey, but you’ll also get the opportunity to glide by the amazing Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge!
Made up of over 2,400 islands, reefs, and rock formations, this refuge should be at the top of your Alaskan bucket list.
Sure, you could always hike across the Harding Icefield for some pretty insane views of it like we did, but that would require a full day’s hike and a whole lot more effort than just booking this cruise that takes you there for a gorgeous ocean perspective… just saying!
๐ 7. Kenai Fjords and Resurrection Bay Half-Day Wildlife Cruise
What’s Included? โคต๏ธ
- 4 hours in duration
- Water, coffee, and tea & snacks for purchase
- Use of binoculars while on board
- An experienced captain and expert naturalist guide
Thanks to its half-day duration, this is one of the most affordable boat tours on this list. Alaska isn’t exactly a budget destination, to say the least, but if you’re hoping to get some time out on the water without blowing your vacation budget all in one go, then this tour can be a fantastic choice.
This short tour is also perfect for those traveling with kids or anyone who is particularly prone to seasickness! Plus, don’t think that just because you won’t be out for as long you won’t see as much – it’s actually quite the opposite!
This tour brings you through Resurrection Bay and into the national park with a special visit to Bear Glacier (it’s a gorgeous spot for kayaking and wildlife watching) with plenty of opportunities to spot whales, sea otters, seals, puffins, and even bald eagles.
๐ 8. Orca Quest Cruise
What’s Included? โคต๏ธ
- 4 hours in duration
- Onboard restroom
- Light snacks & beverages available for purchase
- Experienced captain & naturalist guide
This Alaskan cruise is particularly special owing to the fact that orcas are actually incredibly rare to see, so the chance to spot one is quite a thrill!
Youโll also be given a guided tour of Resurrection Bay and its many glaciers, so this is easily one of the best-combined tours you can find departing from Seward.
We were fortunate enough to see orcas while on board as were many others that we met in Seward! Another affordable option thanks to its shorter duration, this is a wonderful Kenai Fjords boat tour to include on your trip.
๐ 9. Spring Wildlife Cruise
What’s Included? โคต๏ธ
- 4 hours in duration
- Light beverages
- Expert guide and experienced captain
- Use of binoculars while onboard
This Spring Wildlife Cruise is a fantastic choice for travelers visiting Alaska in the spring between March and May!
In just half a day, you’ll get to not only scope out Resurrection Bay and the scenic fjords of the national park, but you’ll also have your eyes peeled trying to spot the rare Californian gray whales that migrate up North America’s west coast every spring.
Most boat tours don’t begin until mid-to-late May, increasing this tour’s value tenfold if you’ll be departing before the start of peak season.

Kenai Fjords Boat Cruises Map
This map outlines the three major routes you can take throughout the national park: the quick Resurrection Bay cruise, the standard Kenai Fjords National Park cruise, and of course the iconic Northwestern Fjords tour!
I created this map so you can see what each of the tours will look like, with there being only minor differences between each of the routes that differ by a half or full hour.
Some of the smaller companies in this list might include other small islands, coves, or long stretches of open water, but for the most part, these are the channels that moat boats follow up and down the Kenai Peninsula.
Kenai Fjords Boat Cruise Packing List
Take it from someone who was caught on board a ship battling 20+ foot waves, sideways rain, and 40-degree temperatures in the middle of July, you shouldn’t go out on these Alaska cruises without the proper gear.
Once your trip is booked, be sure to get your cold-weather gear together and in your suitcase!
- Rain Gear: Waterproof pants and jackets will keep you warm and dry on those cloudy, rainy days. If the weather for your trip is looking clear and sunny throughout the day, then you can usually get away with just a waterproof jacket.
- Boat Shoes: Make sure they’re waterproof! The floor decks get awfully wet and slippery even on clear days, so you’ll want to ensure they’re water resistant (at the bare minimum) and have a good grip so you don’t slip.
- Layers: Even if it’s sunny and 65 degrees on land, it could drop below 40 degrees out on the water. Be sure to have extra warm layers that can easily fit underneath your waterproof layers.
- Sunhat and Sunglasses: Even on cloudy days, the reflections bouncing off the water and glaciers are very bright.
- Sunscreen: Sean got a sunburn after just a few hours out on the water, so be sure to bring some with you (even if all that’s visible is your face!)
- Day Pack: Perfect for carrying your extra layers, some food and drinks,a spare battery pack in case your phone or camera dies, etc.
- Cash: Good for tipping your crew and picking up small snacks and drinks at the service counter
FAQ
In this section, we’ve answered your top questions regarding boat cruises through the Kenai Fjords National Park including the best time to go, how to get to the park from Anchorage, and how many days you should plan on spending in the area.
What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Kenai Fjords National Park?
The best time of year to visit Kenai Fjords National Park is between the months of June and August when temperatures are comfortable, wildlife sightings are at an all-time high for the year, and fjords cruises are in full swing!
Of course, the park is open year-round, but some services may be reduced in late spring and early fall, and especially in the winter months.
If you want to visit in the summer, however, you’ll need to book your hotel in Seward well in advance! Accommodations fill up many months ahead of time, so don’t wait to get your room.
Is It Worth Going to Kenai Fjords?
Kenai Fjords isn’t just worth it – it’s one of the top-rated national parks in North America! From Lake Clark all the way to Denali National Park, Kenai Fjords offers some of the best wildlife sightings across the 49th state.
Between an array of marine mammals including many species of whales, Dall porpoises, sea lions, seals, and sea otters, and numerous land animals such as puffins (both tufted and horned), bears, bald eagles, and more, nature enthusiasts will be in awe.
How Many Days Do You Need in Kenai Fjords?
You’ll want to spend at least 1-2 full days in Kenai Fjords National Park, but the surrounding area including Seward deserves 3-4 days if you’re planning on going fishing, hiking, shopping, dining, and so on.
Visitors can spend time checking out the nearby Exit Glacier, walking the fishing docks, going kayaking in Resurrection Bay, indulging in local seafood, or even just enjoying a good campsite on the waterfront!
What Do You Wear on the Kenai Fjords Boat Tour?
You’ll want to wear warm layers, waterproof boots with a good grip, a down jacket, a hat, gloves, and sunglasses on a boat tour through the national park.
Outside of your clothing, you’ll also want to bring your camera and binoculars! These boat tours provide incredible opportunities for wildlife sightings, so whether the animals are up close or at a distance, you’ll want a way to see them.
Other items that will come in handy are sunscreen, snacks, water, and any medication you may need (motion sickness pills are recommended if you’re prone to sea sickness).
How Do I Get to Kenai Fjords National Park from Anchorage?
When coming from Anchorage, the best way to get to Seward (the town bordering the national park) is to book yourself a car rental directly from the airport.
Ted Stevens International is equipped with numerous onsite agencies including Hertz, Enterprise, Thrifty, Budget, Avis, and other popular companies.
This will provide you with the flexibility of being able to stop along the world-famous Seward Highway as much as you wish at stops like the famous Beluga Point which is known for, you guessed it, spotting Beluga whales!
Of course, you can also take the train along the Alaska railroad which is equally gorgeous and gets you to town without the hassle of driving yourself. However, when you arrive, public transportation is very limited and it can be quite difficult to get yourself around.
So, we suggest picking up a rental car from the airport and enjoying the scenic view on your 2.5-hour drive down to beautiful Seward, Alaska.
From there, you can either drive directly into the visitor’s center and enjoy the park on your own or join a national park tour, or you can book a hotel such as the Seward Windsong Lodge (where Sean and I got married!) which offers guests a free shuttle in and out of the park.
Are There Grizzly Bears in Kenai Fjords National Park?
Brown bears and black bears can be found in large populations in Kenai Fjords National Park. If you plan on taking to the park on foot following your whale watching tour or Kenai Fjords cruise, be sure to take some necessary safety precautions first.
Of course, bear viewing is always best done at a far distance (the NPS recommends following park guidelines which typically range between 200-300 feet), but that can’t always be controlled in the event of a surprise encounter.
To keep you and the bear(s) safe, be sure to carry bear spray (and know how to use it) and make plenty of noise when you travel. Bells, whistles, music, and loud talking are great methods of this!
Can You See the Northern Lights in Kenai?
While it is possible to see the northern lights in Kenai, Alaska in the winter months, typically the show will be quite weak owing to the distance from the Arctic Circle. This creates less-than-ideal conditions for KP values, solar winds, and so on.
If you really want a once-in-a-lifetime spectacular showing of the aurora borealis, then check out these 10 BEST Alaska Northern Lights Tours in 2024! They all take place out of Fairbanks in interior Alaska which is known for having some of the best viewing conditions in North America.
Having lived in Alaska for 3 months in the winter myself, I can personally vouch for these tours!
Should I Book My Kenai Fjords Tour Ahead of Time?
You should absolutely book your Kenai Fjords boat tour ahead of time! Boat tours book up months in advance of the summer and sell out extremely early. While there is always the faint chance that you could grab a ticket right at the booth for a day-of departure like we did on one occasion, this is extremely rare.
In fact, we called 4 times and had to go to the counter twice before two other people suddenly canceled and we got on board for one of our outings. Do yourself a favor and save the stress, just book online in advance and arrive with your tickets in hand.
Parking near the docks can be very hard owing to the vast number of other tourists also trying to board the tour with you anyway, so get there early and set yourself up with a good spot (we like the North Harbor Parking Lot since it’s usually a little less busy and only costs about $10 for the entire day!)
๐ If you’ll also be visiting Juneau (Alaska’s capital) and didn’t book your Kenai Fjords tickets in time, don’t fret! Here are 10 Incredible Juneau Whale Watching Tours and 12 Exhilarating Mendenhall Glacier Tours that will NOT disappoint!
Do Kenai Fjords Tours Offer a Military Discount?
While you may not be able to find it online, Kenai Fjords Tours does typically offer a military discount for active duty members and veterans!
We booked one of our tours right at the counter very last minute and they asked if anyone in our party was military affiliated (Sean is), so we received a massive discount (I believe it was about 20% for both our tickets).
If you are military-affiliated, it can’t hurt to call and ask about any discounts they may be offering.
