- Stroll along the Cliff Walk: This 3.5-mile (7-mile roundtrip) scenic walk along Newport’s eastern shore offers breathtaking views of the ocean on one side and the historic mansions on the other.
Personally, we’ve done this walk with three kids under the age of 10 and it became a nightmare about 2 miles in. If you’ll be traveling with kids, consider turning around after about a mile. Despite this little fact, it’s still one of the top things to do during your East Coast summer vacation! - Explore the Ocean Drive: Take a leisurely drive along the 10-mile Ocean Drive for some of the best views in town. Some people opt to take a stop at Brenton Point State Park for a picnic. I always bring binoculars for this drive since you can often see seals, a variety of birdlike, and even whales on occasion!

Reaching Newport, Rhode Island is fairly straightforward, regardless of whether you’re coming from Providence, Boston, or New Haven.
Providence, RI
If you’re setting off from Providence, a quick 45-minute drive south on I-95, RI-4 S, and RI-138 E will get you there. The journey altogether is about 33.5 miles, so it’s easy to take a day trip from Rhode Island’s capital city!
Boston, MA
From Boston, you can either drive or take a bus. Driving would typically take around an hour and a half via I-93 S and MA-24 S. Alternatively, the Peter Pan Bus Lines operate regular services between Boston’s South Station and Newport, which takes approximately two hours.
New Haven, CT
If you’re arriving from New Haven, driving is the most direct option. The journey should take you around 1 hour and 50 minutes, heading northeast on I-95.
In all cases, it’s worth remembering that traffic can be heavy during peak times and the summer season, so it’s always a good idea to allow extra time for your journey.

However, keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. If you prefer a quieter, more relaxed visit, consider coming during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) or fall (September to November). The weather is still pleasant, and the city is less crowded than in summer.
Fall, in particular, is a beautiful time to visit, as you’ll get to see the stunning fall foliage New England is famous for, though the crowds are still relatively high because of this. I personally find fall to be the best time to visit since I’m not a fan of scalding temperatures and the frank impossibility of snapping a photo without ten thousand people in it, but I also love visiting Newport year-round.
