On our road trip across the U.S., we traveled throughout the Niagara area with our dog and found the area to be very safe (and we were sleeping in a tent on the outskirts of the city in a tiny campground!)
Niagara Falls is among the most popular tourist destinations in the country bringing in a whopping 12 million visitors each year. Thus, with so much foot traffic, some level of crime is only natural.

Is Niagara Falls, New York Safe for Tourists?
Yes, the New York side of Niagara Falls is generally a safe place to visit for tourists. While there is crime in the area, it is not significantly higher than most other tourist cities in the United States.
And from our personal experiences, we found the area to be relatively nicer than other parts of New York (especially New York City) that we visited.
Is Niagara Falls Canada Safe?
Yes, the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is also safe. In fact, many tourists actually prefer the Canadian side to the American one for its larger crestline and better views.
To ensure you stay safe during your visit, make sure you’re familiar with the area and take appropriate safety measures. Research local laws before visiting, and don’t forget to bring a map of the area in case you get turned around!

According to City Data, the Niagara Falls crime rate is exceedingly high. In fact, the area rates higher in crime than most other cities across the United States! This is true for everything from aggravated burglary to arson and even total vehicle theft.
So, if you were to listen to just this data, then you would probably assume that Niagara Falls is dangerous.
However, having been there myself along with 8 million other people in 2022, most of whom didn’t experience any crime (myself included), your chances of falling victim to crime in Niagara Falls are relatively minimal.
Particularly if you’re following basic safety precautions and being mindful of your surroundings, this chance drops even more.
So, while Niagara Falls, and even the Canada crime rate for that matter, may have high crime indexes, that shouldn’t deter you from visiting.

The neighborhoods surrounding the falls do have higher crime rates than others when compared to the state of New York and the rest of the U.S., so it’s best to visit the tourist areas of the falls and keep additional sightseeing to a bare minimum in the residential communities.
Niagara Falls Safety Tips
1. Always use common sense and be aware of your surroundings – if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t
2. Research the local laws ahead of time, so you know what to expect when visiting the area.
3. Bring a map with you (and mark where your car is parked!) in case you get lost while exploring either side of Niagara Falls.
4. Be sure to carry your identification documents on you at all times, as border crossings may require them for entry/exit from Canada and back into the US. If you don’t plan on crossing the US/Canadian border, leave these important documents locked up in your hotel room (NOT your car!)
5. Do not leave any items unattended – even if it’s just for a few moments – as theft is more likely in tourist areas around the falls and in other locations nearby, including both sides of the falls itself (USA & Canada).
6. Avoid walking alone late at night or in the early morning hours. Try to stay with others whenever possible during these times, especially if going out after dark and crossing either border between countries during night-time hours (note: there are plenty of day tours that offer safe travel within this vicinity!)
7. If you’re driving through Niagara Falls, follow all posted speed limits closely, obey traffic signals & signs, keep headlights on full power whenever possible while driving, and never leave vehicles running unattended (even in public lots/rest stops!)
8. If hiking or taking a walk through Niagara Falls State Park, make sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated throughout the day (faintings are common in the brutal summer months).
9. Avoid consuming alcohol if you are planning to drive at any point during your visit to Niagara Falls State Park. There are tens of thousands of tourists and hundreds of officers on every corner, so do yourself and everyone else a favor and keep the area safe.
10. If you must leave your vehicle unattended, always lock the doors and take valuables with you when leaving it. Don’t announce that you’ll be putting your purse in the trunk or under the seat, simply take everything of value with you!

Moving at speeds over 40 kilometers per hour, the Niagara Falls are exceedingly dangerous and need to be visited with caution and care (particularly if you’re traveling with kids or pets)!
It’s best to always view the falls from a safe distance and never cross any boundaries put in place by the park.
There are “No Trespassing” signs posted along the river that must always be heeded, as the shoreline is constantly shifting and can become unstable in certain areas without warning.

Is Niagara Falls Safe for Children?
While Niagara Falls is generally safe for children, there are some extra precautions parents and guardians should consider taking before they arrive and during their trip.
First, be aware of your children’s surroundings and be sure to establish a meet-up point in case anyone gets separated. Do not allow your children to wander unaccompanied, especially after dark, and always have them travel with at least one other adult.
Most importantly, ensure that you have all the necessary paperwork for any minors traveling over the Canadian border such as passports, valid IDs for a minor, etc.
Also, if you decide to take a ride on the Maid of the Mist (as you absolutely should!), then be mindful of your children’s whereabouts while onboard. The boat is made for tourists and has high sides to prevent children from falling overboard, but you can’t be too careful. Plus, kids 5 and under get to board free with an adult!
Why is There So Much Crime in Niagara Falls?
Actually, there isn’t that much crime in Niagara Falls State Park.
In fact, much of the crime resides in the areas surrounding the state park including residential neighborhoods and streets most tourists wouldn’t think to go down (also known as the Niagara Falls ghetto).
From our experience, the State Park felt quite safe and didn’t give us any reason to worry. Just be sure to practice the same safety tips outlined above and you should have a great time in Niagara Falls!
