Wherever we travel, we always bring back a souvenir… always! It doesn’t have to be big or extravagant, instead, we actually prefer to find local trinkets that either put a little money into a local’s pocket or something authentic and unique that most tourists miss.
And Cancun, Mexico is no different! It’s such a major tourist destination so we expected all of the typical keychains, picture frames, and mass-produced “Mexican” products which have been included at the bottom of this list, but we’ve also included several authentic gifts and products that are perfect if you’re looking for something a little bit more unique.
Now, you’ll notice that many of our photos below are from the airport, and that’s because we didn’t bring our phones or cameras with us downtown. Please understand that we always recommend buying your souvenirs from locals rather than tourist spots and airports, but we wanted to provide as many photo examples as we could for you.
The Cancun Airport surprisingly had some local products which was very convenient and allowed us to pick up some souvenirs while we were there, but we would have much preferred not to pay the heightened prices and give 100% of the proceeds to the locals making the products.

1. Alebrijes
We loved seeing these all over downtown Cancun! Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican art sculptures of fantastical creatures. They originate from Mexico City and are often made from wood, showcasing intricate carvings and vibrant paint.
Each piece is unique (except when they’re mass-produced for the tourist shops), and they’re often made to represent beautiful animals with wings, long tails, and magical patterns. They’re thought to bring good luck and prosperity, making them the perfect souvenir to bring home from Cancun!
2. Maracas
Authentic Mexican maracas are handcrafted from materials like gourd and wood, producing a superior sound compared to the tourist versions you’ll find in the airport like the ones in the photo above.
They’re often decorated with traditional designs or vibrant colors and are used in traditional Mexican music and dance. These instruments are not only functional but also serve as a unique decorative piece!
While you can find them in tourist shops all over downtown Cancun and at the airport, you can support local companies by purchasing them from artisan markets or street vendors (just be sure to check the quality!)

Real Mexican sombreros are handwoven and feature unique artisan craftsmanship, distinguishing them from cheap imitations (like the ones in the photo above).

4. Tequila Shot Trays
This ended up being our favorite purchase from Cancun! These shot trays are designed to hold your lime, a salt shaker, and a shot glass so you have everything you need for taking a tequila shot the right way all in one place.

5. Azul Blue & White Platters

Possibly the best Cancun souvenir you could buy for your own kitchen if you love traditional Mexican food, a real tortilla press is typically made from heavy cast iron and used to create perfectly round tortillas.
While walking around the smaller neighborhoods and restaurants of Cancun and Tulum, you’ll see people using these presses to form the tortilla before putting them over an open flame to make the iconic tacos you see all over Mexico. Owning a tortilla press of your own allows you to make fresh tortillas at home, which is something we will be doing as soon as we have a little more room in our kitchen!
12. Molcajete (Mortar and Pestle)
The molcajete, or a traditional stone mortar and pestle as you likely know it as, is used for grinding spices and making salsa, which is essential in Mexican cooking. Often made from basalt or combinations of volcanic rock, each piece is unique and will last a lifetime with proper care.
We love our mortar and pestle for making fresh pesto (I know, but I’m Italian), salsa, and garlic spreads!

One of my all-time favorite Mexican foods are authentic chicken and beef tamales. Delicious, savory fillings are surrounded by masa (corn dough), put inside a corn husk or banana leaf, and then steamed until cooked through.
Many people make their own DIY tamale steamers at home with stacked colanders and a large pot of simmering water, but you can also purchase traditional tamale steamers in Cancun to make your own authentic tamales at home!

If you love spicy Mexican hot chocolate in the winter, don’t leave Cancun without a few bars! Mexican chocolate is typically made from cacao beans that have been roasted, ground, and mixed with sugar and spices (the amount of sugar they add depicts the “darkness” of the bar).
You can find traditional chocolate bars as well as others that include ingredients like cinnamon and almonds everywhere from local shops to the Cancun airport. Plus, they’re usually very affordable!
16. Hot Sauce
Now, Mexican-level spice isn’t for everyone, so it’s best you try a small dab while you’re in Cancun to find one that you can tolerate. But, Mexico has so many delicious hot sauces that you won’t be able to find back home!
From savory and tangy to ghost pepper strength heat, hot sauces are a great way to bring back a taste of Cancun in your suitcase. Just be sure to pack it carefully so it doesn’t break during transit!

I’m not usually a big salsa person, but for some reason when you’re constantly served 5-6 salsa options minimum at every restaurant you visit, it starts to become habit to always want salsa served with your meal!
Cancun has a ton of variety in salsa options (as does most of Mexico), and you can usually buy small jars of them from the local grocery stores to bring home. Cancun Airport also has a good selection of both hot sauces and salsas, so you can get a good variety if you don’t make it into any local stores!

Probably the most classic souvenir that most people end up bringing back from Mexico, whether for themselves or as a gift for others, you can’t go bring with a quality bottle of tequila!
