We recently returned from Cancun and boy do people at the all-inclusive resorts in the hotel zone take their vacation outfits seriously. I mean, we were dressed nice enough, but we certainly weren’t wearing Gucci sunglasses and Prada bathing suits. So, we’ve decided to put together this list of some “must-bring” Mexico vacation outfits for you to get a little outfit inspiration!
We took advantage of the amazing price drops by visiting during hurricane season, but this really won’t affect what you pack if you’ll be visiting during peak season since the temperatures will actually be a little bit cooler and you likely won’t need a rain jacket like us.
With stunning blue beaches, Mayan ruins, underground cenotes, incredible street food, and hospitable locals, Mexico is one of our favorite countries south of the U.S. border. It’s actually home to my favorite food in the world, and just ask my husband, any chance I get to head south to Latin America, I do!

2. Maxi Dress
If you don’t already know, maxi dresses typically are ankle or floor-length and are ideal for both daytime exploring and evening dinners. These dresses offer an elegant yet laid-back look and can be dressed up or down with the right accessories!
The long, flowing fabric provides coverage while still allowing for breathability, making it perfect for breezy or cooler days. Personally, I get too hot in them if it’s above 80 degrees Fahrenheit or so, but if you enjoy the heat, then they’ll be great for you in Mexico!

3. Denim Shorts
Believe it or not, denim is back baby! Denim shorts are a classic and versatile piece that can be paired with just about any top. They’re durable, stylish, and perfect for a range of activities from hiking ancient ruins to simply relaxing at a beachside café.
They come in various lengths and styles, so you can choose a pair that best suits your comfort and fashion preferences. Since Mexico gets quite hot, I’d recommend something a little on the looser side (and at least mid-rise if you’re not about to give in to the low-rise jeans comeback!)

4. Lightweight Tank Tops
Essential for keeping cool in the heat, lightweight tank tops are easy to mix and match with shorts, skirts, and jeans. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to ensure maximum comfort. Tank tops can be layered under a light jacket or cardigan, making them a flexible choice for varying temperatures.
I prefer ones that look a little cuter versus athletic, which is why I opted for this almost lacey-looking one!

5. Bikinis/Swimsuits
Whether you’re lounging by the pool, soaking up the sun on the beach, or taking a refreshing dip in a cenote, having a variety of bikinis or swimsuits is a must when putting together your Mexico outfit ideas.
Look for suits that provide both style and support, and consider bringing a couple of options so you have a backup while one dries. As much as I love strapless tops since they help with the tan lines, if you plan to be drinking a lot at an all-inclusive resort, the reality is that these simply won’t want to stay up when you jump in the pool.

6. Rompers/Jumpsuits
Easily some of my favorite cute outfits for my Mexico vacation were the numerous jumpsuits and rompers I packed. I mean, how can they not be… they’re so versatile! They can be used as pool and beach cover ups, worn to fancy dinners and even out to the Mayan ruins.
They combine style with convenience, they’re easy to slip on, are super comfortable, and can be easily dressed up with the right accessories. Plus, you can get hotter weather ones that are fitted with shorts and tank tops, or cooler weather ones that have long pants like the one I linked to below!

7. Sarong/Beach Cover-Up
I always thought sarongs and beach cover ups were a waste of money… like, why not just use a towel? Then I bought one to see what the hype was about, and instantly regretted the years I didn’t own one.
A sarong or beach cover-up is not only functional but also adds a touch of style when transitioning from beach to town. They can be easily wrapped around your swimsuit for a quick cover-up or even used as a makeshift towel or blanket! The point is, I was missing out, and so are you if you don’t have one.

9. Comfortable Sandals
Exploring Mexico often involves a lot of walking, whether you’re navigating cobblestone streets, all-inclusive resorts (if you’re into them), or ancient ruins. So, comfortable sandals with good arch support can make a world of difference!
Personally, I typically look for pairs that blend style with functionality, so I can wear them all day without discomfort (though this is difficult for me due to my injuries from many years of running).
I purchased the pair below for Mexico and was not sorry about it, so if they can feel good on me, they’ll probably feel good on you too! Slide sandals also work really well around the pool.

I never used to wear sunglasses (and to be honest, I’m still quite bad about it), but the truth is protecting your eyes from the bright Mexican sun is crucial.

These items don’t necessarily need to be added to your list of outfits unless you’re staying on an all-inclusive resort… then, if you don’t have one, you’ll all of a sudden feel very left out because everyone else will!
So, if you are staying on a resort, consider picking up a spacious beach bag to carry all your beach-day necessities like sunscreen, towels, books, and snacks. This way, you won’t be walking back and forth to your room every time you need something!
Look for one with multiple compartments to keep your items organized, and choose a material that’s easy to clean, as sand and water are inevitable.

14. Yoga Pants/Leggings
Perfect for travel days or casual outings, yoga pants and leggings are comfortable and provide a good bit of warmth if you find yourself in Mexico during a hurricane like I did! They’re great for long flights or bus rides, and can easily be paired with a tank top or oversized shirt for a relaxed yet put-together look.
However, it will definitely be in your best interest to opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics to stay comfortable in the heat.

I don’t wear much statement jewelry myself as of now, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to get into in my adult life and let me just say… the women (and men) that I saw in Mexico with all of their layered bracelets, necklaces, and rings… you absolutely rocked it and I’m officially on board.
Statement jewelry can instantly elevate any outfit, adding a touch of glamour and personality, and since these pieces don’t take up much space in your luggage, they’re an easy way to diversify your travel wardrobe.

Top Men’s Mexico Vacation Outfits
1. Lightweight Linen Shirts
Now, I don’t wear men’s clothing except for the occasional oversized shirt I steal from my husband, so I had him help me with this section. According to him, lightweight beach shirts are perfect for a Mexican vacation, especially during hot and humid days.
These shirts are not only breathable but we both also found them incredibly stylish even without any designs like the one above.
He also mentioned that while lighter colors will keep you cooler, unless you’re wearing white, you’re going to be able to see every drop of sweat which is why he goes for black a lot of the time since it always looks nice in pictures and he’s going to sweat no matter what.

2. Short-Sleeve Button-Up Shirts
If you want to spice up your everyday T-shirt, the easiest way is to add buttons! Seems simple, but throw on some buttons and a collar and suddenly you have a shirt that you can wear to a nice dinner (which explains why men can get ready in about 36 seconds!)
They’re available in a multitude of patterns and fabrics, so these shirts can add a touch of flair to your Mexico vacation outfits while being easy to layer and mix with other pieces.
Choose breathable materials like cotton or linen to stay comfortable in the tropical climate of Mexico, and dress it up with a nice watch if you want to feel extra fancy.

Obviously, if you’re heading to Mexico, you’re going to need a bathing suit. It doesn’t even matter if you like to swim or not, the point is that they’ll keep you cool, comfortable, and they dry quickly if they do get wet.
My husband doesn’t like it when the bathing suits are lined with some type of netting, but this is personal preference. Try on some with and without the lining and see what you like best!

5. Chinos
While my husband typically doesn’t wear these, many men throughout Mexico do (both locals and tourists). 6. Flip-Flops
Having brought both ankle-height shoes and flip flops, we can vouch for not wearing the shoes even one time while we traveled around Mexico. Flip-flops are so much easier to slip-on which makes them convenient for the beach, going out to eat, hitting the pool, and everything in between.

7. Casual Sneakers
Casual sneakers are essential for walking tours and day trips to cenotes, ruins, or local markets.
They provide the support and comfort needed for long periods of walking and additional protection if you know you’ll be walking in areas where there may be the potential for streetside trash, large roots and rocks if you’re in the rainforest, and even some extra traction if you’ll be in wet areas.

8. Sun Hat or Baseball Cap
My husband typically stocks to baseball caps, but when we’re in super hot and sunny destinations like Mexico, he goes all out with a full-coverage boonie since he’s pretty suns-sensitive. Regardless of what you prefer, you’ll definitely need some way to protect yourself from the intense Mexican sun!

We’re probably the worst when it comes to wearing eye protection in the sun, despite the overarching popularity of stylish sunglasses, so don’t be like us and pick yourself up a pair that you love! We love and prefer Osprey which is what I’ve linked to below, but there are dozens of brands that make 20-30L backpacks that are the perfect size for day trips, long periods of time on the beach, etc.
A backpack is convenient for carrying essentials during excursions, from sunscreen and water bottles (since you may not be drinking tap water) to maps and Cancun souvenirs.
We also look for padded shoulder straps because we hate the dreaded red shoulder burn that accompanies heavy backpacks and a mesh pad on the inside so your back doesn’t sweat as much!

A sports watch is practical for keeping track of time while enjoying outdoor activities, especially if you’d prefer to leave your phone off the beach!

What Season is Best for a Mexico Vacation?
The winter months between November and April are typically the best time to take a Mexico vacation since it’s the dry season and rain is practically non-existent. This is also when you’ll find most of the party crowds and prices for the year are typically at their highest.
If you want to visit Mexico on a budget, you can visit during the low seasons between May and September.
We visited for the first time in July and got hit with a bit of a storm, so this is something to keep in mind if you’re hoping for hot, sunny weather throughout your trip.
How Should I Dress to Go to Mexico?
When visiting Mexico, dress in lightweight and breathable clothing to stay cool in the heat. Opt for casual, comfortable attire like shorts, sundresses, and sandals for daytime activities.
For cultural sites and nicer restaurants, slightly dressier clothing such as maxi dresses or linen pants can be nice for photos, but don’t worry about going overboard!
Mexico overall is a very casual and beachy destination, so unless you’re visiting for a wedding or formal occasion, you really won’t need anything too fancy.
What Do You Wear to the Beach in Mexico?
At the beach in Mexico, you’ll want to wear swimsuits paired with a t-shirt, beach cover-up, or sarong for walking around.
A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for sun protection are also recommended, while comfortable sandals or flip-flops are essential for going between indoors and outdoors.

What Do People Wear in Cancun?
Having just returned from a trip to Cancun, I can personally say most people were wearing a mix of casual beachwear during the day, such as swimsuits, shorts, sundresses, sarongs, and tank tops, with the occasional maxi dress or linen shirt for an elevated look.
For evenings, people often dress up a bit more with pretty sundresses, skirts, or lightweight trousers and button-up shirts.
Comfortable shoes were quite popular, and I actually only saw a very small amount of women wearing heels or men wearing dress shoes (and I’m 90% sure they were attending a wedding!)
What Not to Bring to Cancun?
When packing for Cancun, avoid bringing heavy or bulky clothing, as the climate is often quite warm and you’ll likely not need it. Also, leave expensive jewelry and valuables at home to reduce the risk of loss while swimming or theft.
You can also skip bringing excessive electronics since you’ll be outdoors most of the time and won’t end up using them as much as you may think! Of course, bring something for the plane ride, but don’t go overboard with tablets, iPads, etc.
Is it OK to Wear Shorts in Mexico?
Yes, it is absolutely okay to wear shorts in Mexico, especially in beach destinations like Cabo, Cancun, and Tulum. They are practical for the hot weather and casual settings, and you’ll find that most tourists and locals live in shorts year-round.
Just opt for longer shorts if you’ll be visiting churches or more conservative areas, or if you’ll be attending a nice meal.
Should I Bring Sneakers to Mexico?
Yes, bringing a pair of comfortable sneakers is a good idea, especially if you plan on doing a lot of walking or visiting archaeological sites and natural reserves.
Sneakers provide better support and protection compared to sandals, so depending on your Mexican itinerary, these are a must when putting together your Mexico vacation outfits.

I always bring a pair since they are comfortable for travel days and they pair nicely with a tunic, but I wouldn’t rely on them as an everyday article of clothing since they’re often made of cotton and I get far too hot too quickly.

Both locals and tourists often opt to wear very bright clothing with white being the main star much of the time. Orange, red, and blue are exceedingly popular, but you’ll see people wearing clothes of every color in Mexico.
It’s certainly one of the most colorful destinations we’ve ever visited and you’ll fit in just fine if you decide to wear a vibrant maxi dress or bright orange swim trunks!
Are Mexican Beaches Clothing Optional?
Most Mexican beaches are not clothing optional. It is standard to wear swimsuits or bikinis at the beach, even if they don’t cover much!
If you prefer a clothing-optional experience, specific beaches like Playa Zipolite in Oaxaca are designated for this purpose.
Can You Buy Mexican Clothing Online?
Yes, you can buy Mexican clothing online quite easily! Many platforms, such as Amazon, Etsy, and specialty boutiques, offer a variety of traditional and contemporary Mexican garments.
I bought everything I packed for Mexico on Amazon and much of it I linked to above!
However, if you’re looking for traditional Mexican clothing including huipils, rebozos, or sombreros, it’s best to try purchasing in person at local markets or shops during your trip so the money actually goes to the people making these items for pennies on the dollar.
